Assess current state and opportunities: overview

The purpose of a current state assessment is to understand the health department’s assets and deficiencies so that opportunities to improve emerge as potential data modernization projects.

How does one examine the current state? Keep in mind topics discussed in the Data Modernization Sustainability section. A current state assessment includes answering a battery of questions—individually, with a small team of partners, or through a facilitated large group session—related to how existing data systems presently operate. Recommended topics include review of data, systems, infrastructure, workforce, governance and policy. The data modernization team must determine the degree of formality and what methods are most appropriate.
