Overview

The Data Modernization Planning Toolkit supports Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) for Prevention and Control of Emerging Infectious Diseases recipients in planning data modernization ventures at health departments. It is not an implementation plan, as each jurisdiction’s data modernization projects will differ. Instead, it is a guide to build leadership and partner buy-in for data modernization work and to assist health departments in developing plans that prioritize data modernization activities. This toolkit is divided into eight sections that unpack key topics to ensure jurisdictions’ success in data modernization planning:

  1. Establishing a data modernization team
  2. Identifying and engaging partners
  3. Developing a data modernization value case
  4. Building data modernization sustainability
  5. Assessing a health department’s current state and identifying opportunities for potential data modernization projects
  6. Prioritizing potential projects for the data modernization plan
  7. Planning a structure to document a data modernization plan
  8. Implementing projects within the data modernization plan
