Reflections on 2024 and looking forward to the new year
Vivian Singletary

Change is one of the few constants in our lives. Whether in professional or personal situations, change can challenge us and teach us at the same time. As I look back on 2024 and the constantly evolving field of public health, this year was no exception. Vivian Singletary

In public health, change reminds us of our ability to innovate, adapt and thrive. What works to protect public health in our homes, communities, countries and the world at this moment can rapidly shift. Influences outside our control, such as natural disasters, disease and emergencies, require us to pivot and respond in resourceful ways.

As 2024 comes to a close, we take a moment to reflect on the incredible progress and achievements of this year at PHII.

We tackled some of the field’s most pressing challenges, pushing the boundaries of what data and technology can do to advance public health. A couple of our transformative projects include:

  • establishing collaborative data ecosystems in Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Portland, Oregon, to help those most impacted by structural racism and systemic inequities in these three communities
  • training and strengthening the workforce through an eight-week course on designing and managing public health information systems

These projects not only enhanced PHII’s capacity to respond to emerging public health needs but also empowered communities and organizations with actionable insights. Our initiatives exemplify the power of informatics to bridge gaps, inform decisions and improve health outcomes for all.

Looking ahead to 2025, PHII acknowledges both opportunities and uncertainties. We’ll continue to value and work with our existing partners on projects with domestic and global impact. We’re proud of our role in a collaborative project created by The Global Fund and implemented by our umbrella organization, The Task Force for Global Health, to help transform public health disease surveillance in Nigeria, the Philippines and Madagascar.

The coming year promises continued advancements in public health informatics, but it also requires us to stay vigilant and flexible as the public health landscape evolves. While the broader socio-political environment may bring changes to priorities and funding, we remain steadfast in our mission: to help public health organizations harness the power of data and technology to protect and improve health.

I admit that change isn’t always easy. But with resilience and our colleagues’ support, change can lead us to unexpected places of growth.

Thank you for being part of PHII’s story. Together, we’ll continue to rise to the challenges and possibilities that lie ahead.

Here’s to a successful, impactful and innovative 2025!
