Infographic: a snapshot of the social determinants of health
Piper Hale, MPH
Today is the second day of National Public Health Week and, in honor of its theme, “Starting from ZIP,” we wanted to show a snapshot of how ZIP code can influence health. For this experiment, we turned to our own home state of Georgia, and with the help of County Health Rankings, we compared how Forsyth, Georgia’s healthiest county, stacks up against Early, its least healthy county.

Our director Dave Ross recently wrote about the social determinants of health—social variables like ZIP code that influence the health of a community and the individuals who live there. This infographic shows some of those determinants in action, revealing how factors like insurance status, income and food deserts can correlate with quality of life and even the likelihood of premature death.
