Enhancing Electronic Health Record Systems to Generate and Exchange Data with Electronic Vital Registration Systems

The specific purpose of this project is to develop a roadmap with possible routes for certification of electronic health record systems’ (EHR) capabilities for generating data for exchanging data with electronic vital registration systems (EVRS). To provide context for the project, PHII’s consultants reviewed publications, websites, and unpublished documents related to state and national vital registration systems, EHRs, and certification programs for EHRs. They also conducted telephone interviews with 42 experts, such as state health department vital records managers and informaticians, health care providers and medical informaticians, certification experts, and EHR and EVRS vendors. Interview questions focused on potential barriers, facilitators, and next steps to enhancing EHRs to generate and exchange data with EVRS.
