Upal Nath serves as the CHAMPS Informatics Business Unit Director, overseeing the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) informatics office at PHII. Upal leads the development, maintenance and support of the CHAMPS global surveillance data network. He oversees systems and data analysis, IT strategic planning, technology solutions, service quality, and the operations of CHAMPS enterprise systems, including data collection systems, clinical data systems and data warehouses. He leads the CHAMPS informatics team and ensures the IT infrastructure meets the project’s epidemiological and reporting needs.
Upal is a computer scientist by training and holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science. Before coming to PHII, Upal managed the Data Science Program at Imperial College London. While there, he held a joint appointment with the UK Research & Innovation’s Medical Research Council Laboratory of Medical Sciences and an honorary appointment with the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
With over 20 years of experience in systems and data analysis, Upal has led technical teams in developing and deploying digital solutions for data modernization, machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), surveillance, and population health. He specializes in system analysis and design, data analytics, data visualization and capacity building.
Previously, Upal held leadership roles at various academic, healthcare, and research institutions in the US, UK, Switzerland, and Canada. He also directed data governance and infrastructure initiatives at University College London and University of Bern. Upal led strategic data architecture and population health research programs at the University of Colorado and Dalhousie University.
