The “initiate” phase of a project is focused on building a business case and obtaining leadership support to proceed with a project. A migration team moving through the “initiate” phase will finalize their project charter, which will define the scope of the migration project, and they will develop a better understanding of which stakeholders need to be included.

How to navigate the “initiate” phase

Move through the tabs on this page to access the tools to work through this project phase. Start with the “primary tools” tab to access the critical project artifacts for this phase. You can then review the “supplementary tools” tab to see if any of the more specialized tools meet your needs. Last, check the “phase exit criteria” tab to ensure you’re ready to move to the next phase.

Reference the graphic above for a snapshot of the five phases of the project management lifecyle. For a more in-depth view of the framework and the associated steps of each phase, see the full framework below.

Project Management Framework

Apply project management and change management to guide the migration process

This framework, also depicted above, will be your guide throughout the project, walking you through the critical objectives, key artifacts and exit criteria for each phase of an IIS platform migration project: initiate, plan, execute, monitor and control, and close. This reference should be kept close at hand throughout the migration process, and is offered in a printable poster format for that purpose.
