The Cyberterrorism Threat
Regardless of the outcome of today's election, I hope the issue of cyberterrorism, which was briefly mentioned during the third presidential debate, receives more political attention over the next four years. For more insight, I highly recommend this New York Times article on the efforts of Peter G. Neumann, a computer security expert at SRI International. Neumann argues for massive public investment to rethink computer security – what he calls the “clean slate” approach. He points out that we’ve put band aids on old technology for too long and that we now need a ground-up rethink. Doing anything short of that perpetuates the computer monoculture that will eventually subject our economy to cyberterrorism.
